Nuclear Solutions Division

NSD provides services in the highly-focused technical areas of radiation and radioactivity, with an emphasis on radiation protection (health physics) and radiological engineering.

NSD's mission is to give clients the capability of cost-effectively protecting their workers, their facility, the public, and the environment from any adverse effects associated with the use of radioactivity and radiation-producing machines.

NSD executes its mission by consistently applying the following steps on every job assignment:

  • Developing a sound technical basis for every activity to be performed.

  • Codifying each activity's technical basis in easy-to-understand and easy-to-implement instructions.

  • Making sure the client has a thorough understanding of each instruction so that it will be effectively and uniformly applied.

  • Implementing the instructions on behalf of the client only when it is cost-effective for us to do so.

  • Communicating all costs, scheduled and scopes of work for each job assignment before the work begins.

  • Standing by all pre-approved schedule and costs.

Consulting

Nuclear Services Division (NSD) provides radiation-related consulting and services to a broad range of commercial and government clients. With offices in Ohio, Virginia, and Maryland, we stand ready to work with you on any challenge that has either a planned or unexpected radiation-related component.

NSD offers the services of a staff of Certified Health Physicists, Certified Industrial Hygienists, and Registered Radiation Protection Technologists, all of whom can work as an extension of your organization. They stand ready to confer with you to understand the issue at hand, provide guidance on how to approach and resolve the problem, and if so desired, take care of the radiological matter in its entirety, leaving you and our staff to concentrate on your day-to-day business responsibilities.

NSD's services different from those from other consulting firms because we utilize our large inventory of standardize products and resources that have been proven over time, and whose development costs have long ago been recovered from successful work that NSD has performed for others... and we never re-create a solution if one has implemented many times before will solve the problem. NSD's staff of professionals are skilled in visualizing the solution to a problem, from start to finish, and in selecting/applying/customizing our standardized products when there is a benefit of doing so. Our references will attest to our ability to:

  • Develop technically-sound, legally-defensible programs and procedures for site/facility characterization, health and safety compliance, personnel exposure control, site closure, regulatory interactions, and other issues.

  • Evaluate whether specific sites/locations pose a radiological risk to people.

  • Evaluate alternative follow-up actions.

  • Provide input on regulatory issues that many impact any decisions that are made.

  • Provide input on regulatory issues that may impact any decisions that are made.

  • Facilitate communications on technical issues.

Our consultants have decades of experience in developing, managing, critiquing, and upgrading industrial hygiene and radiation safety programs for both commercial and government clients. Each has been actively involved in all aspects of health and safety including regulatory compliance, site decommissioning, program evaluation, applied health physics, occupational safety, training and project management. They have also implemented the elements of a comprehensive radiation protection program in research, analytical and medical settings where nuclear medicine and tracer research was being performed. They have also served as consultants to large number of government and commercial facilities,, and thus knows "what it takes" to solve the problem at hand quickly, efficiently, and to the satisfaction of regulators and the law.

Nuclear Services

NSD provides services in the highly-focused technical areas of radiation protection and radiological engineering. Because of our track record of successes, we have earned the respect of our clients and both federal and state regulators alike.

The services we provide range from simple site investigations, to remedial actions (including radioactive and mixed waste brokering, transportation and disposal), to the performance of MARSSIM-based scoping, characterization and final status surveys, to oversight support services for large remediation projects. Within that range bring skilled project managers with the ability to develop technically sound work plans and cost estimates, respond to regulator comments, and assist with community regulations. Outfield site managers are equipped with all of the equipment, experience, training, subcontractors, credentials and other tools needed to ensure site operations are completed safely, effectively, on schedule and on budget.

In addition, we also maintain a radioactive materials license which permits us to handle all quantities and forms of radioactivity throughout the country (via interstate reciprocity), and a License for Delivery for the disposition of radioactive and mixed waste.

Special Services

NSD offers a wide variety of products and services in the areas of radiation protection and radiological engineering. However, we understand that companies might be reluctant to use a consultant with whom they have no experience. This when a company initially approaches NSD for assistance, we offer a number of special services. Although these services involve small budgets, they provide an insight into the quality and value of working with NSD. After evaluating the return received on their investment, companies then become comfortable with establishing a client-consultant relationship with NSD.

Training

Radioactive material and radiation producing machines are used every day by thousands of people. Your business probably depends on them. The safe use of these items is important to healthcare, research, education, manufacturing, power production, construction, and other industries. What's more, training workers is important to ensure these uses may continue to benefit the public. Improper use of radiation and radioactive material causes concern that people and the environment will be harmed. Training workers to use these sources safely protects the workers public and our environment and allows their continued use in these important industries.

Providing health and safety information and training helps you to:

  • Ensure you or your employees work safely with sources of radiation and comply with regulatory requirements

  • Inform workers on methods to employ to protect themselves and assure they are not unnecessarily exposed to radiation by the work they do

  • Develop  a positive health and safety culture, where safe and healthy working becomes second nature to everyone

  • Determine how you can manage health and safety better

  • Meet your regulatory responsibilities to protect the health and safety of your employees

Effective training:

  • Will contribute towards making your employees competent in health and safety

  • Can help your business avoid the distress that accidents cause

  • Can help you avoid the financial costs of accidents and noncompliance with regulatory requirements.

Federal and state regulations require the users of radiation sources provide information, instruction, and training to workers to ensure, as far as it practicable, the health and safety of your employees, to the public and the environment.

NSD is committed to helping organizations train their workers on health and safety. Our courses are designed to help workers understand the hazards posed by radiation, radioactivity and other hazards in the workplace, and our instructors are experienced professionals with significant field experience in handling and working with sources of radiation, and with plenty of knowledge to share with their students.

NSD offers a variety number of training courses and classes that have been delivered to industrial, medical, research and university licenses for a number of years now. Our presentations are geared to the specific audience, delivered by personnel with hands-on experience in the topic at hand, and suitable for individuals who are just learning the fields of radiation and radioactivity as well as those who just need some refresher training. The following is a list of a few of the courses/classes that we present.

Licenses & Certifications

NSD is certified to the ISO 9001:2015 International Quality System Standard Certificate No. 08.002.1. The NSD quality management system was audited and certified by an independent accredited register who confirmed that our nuclear services, consulting and instrumentation program operations are designed to ensure compliance with customer, regulatory and legal requirements.
